Seniors Adjust to New School Online

This is one of the hardest stories that I have ever had to come up with. Not because of the subject matter but because this was my “plan f” story. Before the Coronavirus pandemic shut down everything including all our school’s functions, I had a sports story in the works regarding the baseball team. I had all my interviews planned to take place over spring break along with getting natural sound from the games. But before we could even truly get into the break the hammer came down (as it should have) from the Sun Belt Conference that all spring sports had been suspended. This meant that I could no longer talk to people on the baseball team I needed to and also I couldn’t get the sounds I was aiming for. Usually when your first story falls through you just go to your “plan b” story, no big deal. The problem was that my plan b,c,d, end e story all revolved around sports. This is because I did not plan for a worldwide pandemic to take away my access to the stories I wanted to create. I thought the worst thing that could happen was that I would not be able to get the interviews I needed and if that was the case I would move on to another sports story. What made things worse was that the city went on lockdown and everyone had to practice social distancing. This became a roadblock because I couldn’t schedule to meet anybody in person so I had to think of the resources I had available and that meant I had to do it over the phone. My first thought was to create a story around senior athletes who weren’t able to finish out their last season and get their thoughts on the heartbreak. However, I was told that we could not speak to the athletes about it yet so I would only be able to get one interview, the athletic director. Unfortunately, one interview is not enough for this story. But I wanted to keep the senior theme. This is what I ended up creating. I felt that through this moment all seniors, not just athletes, were devastated and I wanted to highlight a few individuals’ thoughts. This is the first nonrelated sports story I have done in a couple of years so it took some time to try to find the angle. I was able to pull it off and huge thank you to everyone that was involved in this story as it was time out of your day too. I think the last lines of the audio story apply to my story as well. People will come together to do whatever it takes to overcome.
